Tech making our roads safer

Last time we checked; our roads became far safer. As Covid-19 is living with us for more than a year, there are already fewer vehicles on roads. But that doesn’t necessarily mean people are not travelling. In an article covered by Bloomberg, they mentioned emptier roads were more lethal. And that was stats for 2020 only. 2021 is not much different. As a direct result of the pandemic, we see less vehicle on street. Only the ones with the necessity to travel and reaching destination. But things took turn for worse. Less vehicle moderation and not following proper procedures on regular basis is just another chapter in the book. But tech today made our lives easier and at the same time safer.

According to the US advocacy group data, there were about 42,000 deaths on roads last year. Though cars are safer than ever. Smart technology like AI and machine learning technology on our GPS make turns smoother and well calculated. Smart cars like Tesla can travel from one location to another automatically and that too without anyone in the driver seat. We recently saw an accident with two deaths on a Tesla vehicle. But compared to more regular engines, these electric vehicles are far safer. As they had to come through many rules and regulations to have a green light on busy roads.

Severe cases bumped up to 8% more than last year when the world was busier than ever and everything was not at a standstill. Currently, we have intelligent traffic management systems (ITMS). These are advanced monitoring applications that work on various modes to serve both traffic functionality and safety measure. Computers behind the scene calculate the shortest and efficient route and the number of vehicles queuing up for the slot. Our goal was not just to store and identify information but to process them properly. We can see the results daily as our data is improving and safe procedures are being practised. This is just one amongst few notable mentions that made our roads safer. After the Covid hit, we saw cameras with traffic ticket arrival in many roads of New York and other places. The purpose of it is as simple as it sounds. To remove as much human contact as possible in-between places. We couldn’t’ stop tickets as they would fuel reckless driving, instead, we got a smart solution.

Smart cams help recognise distributed plates and so on. AI on the other hand is not a concept anymore. Even in traffic where thousands of vehicles are passing every hour. It is hard for the human eye to keep track of important things. The multitude of these calculations varies a lot.

By 2050, it is estimated that traffic fatalities will reduce up to 90%. A report on electric vehicles told us even Tesla made an impact by reducing 40% accident rates. Most of the time human errors are emotion-based and also sometimes depends on physical matter. Computers and codes don’t make those errors. They don’t need to understand the unnecessary emergency on the road, so they calculate the safest and efficient way for travelling. Even saves up on the fuel cost. Improved tiers designed for various terrain adds up proper friction and that helps too. In open road, every bit of help and safety measure counts. In 2020 streets were emptier, meaning faster speeds and more accidents.

We now have general driving safety at our fingertip helps. Even for pedestrians because they suffer most on open roads. Smart navigating technology allows drivers better knowledge of their surroundings and we couldn’t think of them a decade ago. An informative story covered by TheNewYorkTimes told us similar details.
